What does your energy label mean?

The energy label shows at a glance how energy efficient a home is. The scale runs from G for a very inefficient home to A++++ for the most efficient homes.

The greener the label, the less energy a home needs to stay warm and comfortable. You notice it in a lower energy bill, but also in more comfort: fewer draughts, fewer cold walls and a more even temperature.

  1. A Very efficient, including A+ to A++++
  2. B Efficient
  3. C Fairly efficient
  4. D Average
  5. E Poor, improving it pays off
  6. F Inefficient
  7. G Very inefficient

How is an energy label determined?

Since 2021, a certified energy advisor visits the home for an inspection. Based on what they find, they calculate how much fossil energy the home needs per square metre per year. That result determines the label. These elements are taken into account:

Insulation
How well the roof, walls and floor are insulated.
Glazing and frames
Single, double, HR++ or triple glazing makes a big difference.
Heating
A gas boiler, (hybrid) heat pump or district heating.
Hot water
How hot water for the shower and kitchen is produced.
Ventilation
Natural ventilation or a mechanical system with heat recovery.
Generating your own energy
Solar panels and a solar water heater improve the label.

When do you need an energy label?

Selling

If you sell a home, you are required to have a valid energy label no later than the transfer of ownership.

Renting

When you rent out a home, the new tenant must also receive a valid energy label.

10 years

That is how long an energy label is valid. After that you need a new label when you sell or rent out the home.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find an energy label for my address?
Not every home has a registered energy label. A label is only recorded once a certified energy advisor has inspected the home, for example when it is sold or rented out. Have you just had a label made? Then it can take a while before it appears in the official register. We update our data daily.
How long is an energy label valid?
An energy label is valid for 10 years. The search results above show exactly until when the label of your home is valid.
Is an energy label from before 2021 still valid?
Yes. Labels issued before 2021 using the old method remain valid until their expiry date. However, an old label cannot be compared one-to-one with a label issued using the current method.
Can I improve my energy label?
Yes. After sustainability improvements such as insulation, better glazing, a heat pump or solar panels, you can have a certified energy advisor issue a new energy label. The new label then replaces the old one.
Where does the data come from?
From EP-Online, the official energy label database of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). We retrieve this data daily.
